Newcastle to immediately lose millions from £125m Alexander Isak to Liverpool deal

Newcastle have accepted an offer considerably lower than their £150million asking price for Alexander Isak and will now have to part ways with a chunk of that sum

Newcastle United are set to lose a chunk of the £125million fee they will receive for Alexander Isak. The Magpies accepted Liverpool’s Premier League record-breaking offer for the striker in the early hours of transfer deadline day on Monday.

The Reds’ initial £110m bid for the Sweden international was rejected in early August. Isak then went on strike to force a move away after three years on Tyneside, before publicly accusing Newcastle of breaking transfer promises.

But Newcastle have now agreed to back down from their gargantuan original asking price of £150m. And the 25-year-old is set to seal his dream transfer by agreeing a six-year contract, with a medical booked for Monday morning.

And along with the blow of receiving £25m less than they envisioned, the Magpies will also have to hand over millions to Real Sociedad, who sold the then-22-year-old forward to Newcastle for around £60m three years ago.

Sky Sports reports that the La Liga club inserted a sell-on clause during those negotiations, which means they will receive 10% of any transfer fee Newcastle get over €70m (£60.5m) for Isak.

In addition, Sociedad will also receive 2% through FIFA’s Solidarity Programme, 0.5% for every season he played for the Spanish side. Isak joined Sociedad in 2019 from Borussia Dortmund, spending three years in San Sebastian before joining Newcastle.

That brings the sum Newcastle have to pay Real Sociedad to around £7m, on top of the club’s transfer record-breaking fee they splashed out in the summer of 2022.

Despite Isak’s £150m valuation by Newcastle, the St James’ Park outfit were convinced that it was time to cash in on their talisman after failing to agree a new contract with him last week. Newcastle’s owners had travelled to the player’s home to convince Isak to stay put for another season with the offer of an improved contract, which he refused.

His decision to burn his bridges with Newcastle by releasing an inflammatory statement in August played into Liverpool’s hands, strengthening the Reds’ position in negotiations by making it seem unlikely that he could rejoin Eddie Howe’s squad.

And with the clock ticking towards Monday’s 7pm deadline, a compromise was eventually reached between the two Premier League sides. Isak will leave having scored 62 goals in 109 appearances for the club, including 27 goals in 42 games last season.

He netted the Carabao Cup final winner in March against Liverpool, which ended the Magpies’ long run without a domestic trophy, before helping them clinch Champions League qualification.
