Alexander Isak has completed a blockbuster move from Newcastle to Liverpool for a British record fee, but now all eyes are on when the Swedish star can make his debut for the Reds
Liverpool fans will be eager to see Alexander Isak lining up for their team as quickly as possible following his deadline day move to the club. However, the £125million signing from Newcastle has cast doubt on just when he’ll be fit enough to make his bow for the Reds.
Isak, 25, finally clinched a move to Anfield following a transfer saga that dominated much of the summer. After an initial unsuccessful bid that was lodged in early August, Liverpool finally announced the signing of the Swedish international for a British record fee two and a half hours after the transfer window had shut on Monday evening.
While football fans often share their frustration with the first international break of the season coming just three weeks in, the Kop faithful will be more desperate than usual to see the resumption of Premier League football in two weeks’ time. As with it will most likely come Isak’s first appearance for Liverpool – but only if he is deemed match fit.

After a summer that saw Isak effectively down tools at Newcastle, with him missing the duration of pre-season and the start of the 2025/2026 campaign, he is naturally far form being in peak condition.
While Isak has trained alone, and even had a stint training at former club Real Sociedad over the summer, Liverpool’s new No. 9 has admitted he will have to wait and see as to just when he can make his debut for the club.
«Yeah, of course,» Isak said when asked by club media if he is targeting Liverpool’s clash with Burnley on September 14 for his first run out in a red shirt.
But erring on the side caution, he alluded to his debut for Liverpool being slightly delayed. He added: «I think that’s the ambition. However, I’ve had a tricky summer where I haven’t played any games and I’ve had restricted training, so I think that’s one to judge and to analyse where I am at and how much I am ready to give. But I certainly want to play as soon as possible.»
Isak is now headed away on international duty having been selected by Sweden for two FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia on September 5 and Kosovo on September 8. Upon his return, and if deemed not fit enough to face Burnley, Isak could make his bow in either of two blockbuster ties for Liverpool.
Isak could turn out for the Reds on Wednesday, September 17 in a game that will see Arne Slot’s side take on their first Champions League fixture of the season with a league phase match against Atletico Madrid at Anfield.
Isak also has an opportunity to make a spicy home Premier League debut for Liverpool against neighbours Everton on Saturday, September 20. Isak scored 62 goals in 109 appearances across three seasons with Newcastle and helped them win their first trophy in 70 years.
The Swede even scored against Liverpool in the Magpies’ Carabao Cup victory at Wembley in February. Yet Isak’s move fractured his relationship with his former club beyond repair, with both parties releasing pointed statements on the saga.
The 25-year-old admitted that finally securing the move to the Premier League champions has come as a relief and he is now focused on getting on the pitch as soon as possible.
«It’s mixed emotions – some relief but a lot of pride, happiness,» he added. «I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my team-mates and the fans, and getting back out there.»
