Misdemeanour charges filed against Jon Jones in June for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident have been dismissed.
This stems from a traffic accident that occurred in New Mexico in February involving a woman who told police Jones had been the driver of the vehicle before fleeing on foot.
A police report at the time stated the woman was found sitting on the passenger side of the vehicle and showed signs of «significant intoxication.»
Per Sportsnet’s Aaron Bronsteter, Jones’s attorney Christopher Dodd issued the following statement Tuesday:
“We have been fully vindicated. From the very beginning, we explained that a woman made a false allegation against Jon in an effort to avoid being arrested for DWI, and unfortunately, the police accepted that claim without properly weighing the facts. Once the relevant documents were finally disclosed by the police department, Jon’s cell phone records made it undeniably clear that he was nowhere near the scene of the crash.
“We are grateful that the district attorney’s office took the time to conduct a full and fair review of this case, which ultimately confirmed Jon’s innocence. At the same time, it is deeply troubling that such critical evidence was disregarded, forcing Jon to endure this ordeal unnecessarily. Our investigation into how this occurred remains ongoing.”
Jones, a former two-weight UFC champion, is no stranger to legal issues and traffic violations in the state. In 2015, Jones pleaded guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving injury in New Mexico where Jones has lived and trained throughout the majority of his career. He avoided jail time but received supervised probation and the incident resulted in Jones getting stripped of his UFC title and suspended indefinitely.
The 38-year-old announced his retirement from mixed martial arts earlier this year but has since re-entered the UFC’s drug testing pool, leaving the door open for a possible return to competition.
Jones has indicated he wishes to compete on the proposed UFC event at the White House next summer.
