Matheus Cunha claimed he’ll «be back soon» after hobbling off during Manchester United’s win over Burnley on Saturday with his injury sparking major concerns for Ruben Amorim. Cunha has been one of the more impressive performers for the Red Devils, despite their indifferent start to the season.

The Brazilian signed from Wolves in the summer but has quickly settled in as he looks for his first United goal. However a hamstring injury saw him hobble off during the first-half at the weekend. Cunha was able to walk out of Old Trafford freely on Saturday night, giving those connected with the club hope that his injury was not as bad as was feared – and now the Brazilian has taken to social media to claim his absence will not be a long-term one.

Having pulled out of the Brazil squad, he said: «What an incredible environment, it’s great to be here. I’ll be back soon, always with joy and gratitude. Thanks for all the messages.»

Amorim was evidently concerned at the weekend with Mason Mount also a fitness concern. He said: «It was hard to lose a player like Cunha and Mason Mount – Mount played like 30 minutes with an injury. I don’t know [if they are long-term injuries], I don’t know but I’m concerned about that. They are so important for us, so we’ll see.»

United have four points from their opening nine league games but their next assignment is the derby against Manchester City at the Etihad. They will want a full squad if they are to head to the home of their neighbours, who have begun the year slow, and leave with a victory.

Amorim has already underlined his admiration for Cunha and the impact he’s made following his £62.5million switch from Molineux. The United boss hailing his competitive spirit and demands he puts on the squad to win.

«He’s a loud guy that’s really important in this moment,» said the Portuguese coach. «When he’s upset, you can feel it in the environment and that’s good. When you play some games and he loses, he’s a different guy, and that’s good. He has some characteristics that we miss last season, so I’m really happy with him and the other guys.»
