MANILA, Philippines — Sherwin Meneses’ impressive UAAP run with National University only lasted for one year after the decorated volleyball coach parted ways with the Lady Bulldogs.

Sources privy to the situation revealed to the Inquirer that Meneses will no longer call the shots for NU, which he steered to a UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball title to complete a golden repeat in Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon’s final year.

Regine Diego takes over as the head coach for NU, sources also said.

NU has yet to announce the development, but Diego, the team’s assistant team manager since last year, attended the Shakey’s Super League Pre-season Unity Cup press conference on Wednesday with the Lady Bulldogs.

A source revealed that the seven-time PVL champion coach of Creamline and the management were “unable to reach an agreement.”

In a message to Inquirer, Meneses assured that there were no issues with the NU management upon his exit.  His wife Nerissa,  in a Facebook post, clarified that Meneses had only signed a one-year contract to coach the Lady Bulldogs.

Meneses won his first UAAP title with NU last May, proving that the school had the best of both worlds with the winningest PVL coach and the emerging dynasty of the Lady Bulldogs.

He steered NU to the best record of the season, 12-2, before taking down Far Eastern University in the Final Four and sweeping La Salle in the best-of-three finals to deliver the school’s third title in four years.

Meneses also helped NU complete a ‘three-peat’ in the SSL preseason last year. In fact, he was with the team when it ruled the National Invitationals Davao Leg last July, which turned out to be his final run.

Diego, meanwhile, is making her first head coaching gig in the women’s division since being coach Norman Miguel’s deputy in 2019 and 2020.

She steered the Nazareth School to the UAAP Season 82 title in 2019 and her last stint as head coach was with the defunct F2 Logistics in the PVL two years ago.

Diego will inherit an intact squad with Lams Lamina, Vange Alinsug, Arah Panique, and Shaira Jardio as well as prized rookie Sam Cantada.

Her first mission will be a bid for a fourth straight SSL preseason crown starting this month.

NU has seen a revolving door of coaches since sweeping UAAP Season 84 three years ago. Karl Dimaculangan stepped down after a runner-up finish in Season 85 and was replaced by returning coach Norman Miguel, who reclaimed the title last year.

Miguel was replaced by Meneses months later, before another coaching change.
