Thomas Tuchel shares stance on Mason Greenwood England return after Jamaica snub

Mason Greenwood’s only England cap came back in 2020 and it appears the now Marseille striker is leaving the door ajar to a return to the Three Lions fold in the near future

Thomas Tuchel has made no contact with Mason Greenwood about making an England return. Former Manchester United striker Greenwood this week snubbed Jamaica and the suspicion is that he is leaving the door open for England.

Greenwood last played for England five years ago when he was sent home from Iceland in disgrace after breaking Covid rules with Phil Foden by inviting two women to the team hotel.

In October 2022, Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour. In February 2023, all charges against him were dropped.

There appeared no way back for Greenwood and he has begun the process of changing nationalities to represent Jamaica which he can do through his dad’s parentage.

But Jamaica boss Steve McClaren revealed this week that Greenwood – who is now enjoying a career revival with Marseille – turned his back on a call-up.

Greenwood is still eligible for England but Tuchel says there has been no conversation and the striker is not in his thoughts. England boss Tuchel said: “I have not spoken to him until now. I have not spoken to him or his camp.

“My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn’t give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team. I don’t rule anything out but he is no priority at the moment.”

It is a strange stand-off because Greenwood’s snub for Jamaica has clearly annoyed McClaren who admitted the 23-year-old has had second thoughts.

McClaren said: “We acquired a passport and we expected him to be coming to this camp but in a conversation with his family, he’s not going to commit at this time to anybody.

“It’s a little bit disappointing, we probably have to be more patient. We will keep pursuing him because I know from my conversations with Mason that he loves Jamaica.

«He wants to concentrate on club football and not commit to an international team at the moment. He’s taking his time over that. Who knows in the future?

“It’s a disappointment for everybody because he would have been a big asset and he would have come here and enjoyed his football.”
